Atiku demands safer petroleum products transport over Jigawa explosion

– As Lokpobiri calls for probe

Port Harcourt — In the wake of a devastating petrol tanker explosion in Majiya Town, Taura Local Government Area of Jigawa State, which has claimed over 100 lives, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, has called for urgent reforms in the transportation of petroleum products.

Atiku who advocated for a shift to rail systems as a safer alternative, said the incident in Jigawa underscores the dangers associated with current road transport methods.

The former Vice President emphasized the critical need for enhanced training for drivers who handle flammable materials and a comprehensive review of safety protocols.

He expressed his condolences to the families affected by the tragedy and urged immediate action to support the injured.

He said, “It is about time we explored other means, like rail, for transporting petroleum products around the country. It is also pertinent to train drivers involved in the transportation of flammable products and review the protocol for the transportation of petroleum products and other inflammable products.”

Meanwhile, the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Oil) Sen. Heineken Lokpobiri, has emphasized the importance of safety in petroleum product transportation, and called for investigation into the incident.

Lokpobiri while also condoling with the families and victims of the devastating tanker explosion tragedy, prayed for the swift recovery of those who were injured.

He said, “Only a few days ago, I emphasized the importance of safety in petroleum product transportation during discussions with the FRSC Corps Marshall. This incident underscores the urgency of that collaboration.

“Therefore, I have immediately directed the NMDPRA to carry out a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding this unfortunate event.

“While I implore the public to resist the temptation to approach petroleum-laden tankers, as the risks are often fatal, I urge the Petroleum Tanker Drivers and the National Association of Road Transport Owners, NARTO, to collaborate closely with the FRSC and NMDPRA, ensuring only certified and licensed drivers transport these products.”
