ChampionX boosts Permian Basin production capability by nearly 10% while reducing emissions

ChampionX has completed a multi-million-dollar transformative project to enhance its chemical manufacturing hub in the Permian Basin. The project is a key initiative to meet industry demands while reducing inter-plant transportation, and associated carbon emissions, by approximately 56.7 tons of CO2 per year.

The ChampionX manufacturing plant in Odessa, Texas was established in 1975. Since then, the plant has played a significant role in the oil and gas industry, contributing to the development of production, completions and midstream chemistries.

This major enhancement to its production plant and facilities includes the installation of state-of-the-art automation and packaging technologies, including an automated tote and drum filling station. Aligned with the global organization’s focus on safety, continuous improvement and sustainability, ChampionX has collaborated with a leading liquid filling and conveyor systems company to deliver an optimized chemical filler system that is ergonomic, safe and efficient.

In addition, ChampionX has also hired five personnel to support its expanded operations, bringing its total workforce to 68 full-time employees at the site. The company has invested in training its manufacturing team on the new systems to boost skills and efficiency, resulting in increased productivity and higher-quality products and services for customers.

The company’s Permian basin region has seen a nearly 10% year-on-year increase in customer demand for its chemistry solutions, such as emulsion breakers, corrosion/paraffin/scale inhibitors, biocides and H2S scavenger solutions. The new filler technology at the plant enables a 10% productivity increase, resulting in more than 10 million kgs of additional throughput.

“This investment significantly strengthens our position in the Permian Basin as a global leader in production chemistry solutions, providing industry-leading technology and unmatched specialty manufacturing capabilities closer to our customer base,” said Ricky Kostner, Sales Manager for ChampionX Permian Basin. “With these upgrades, we can provide reliable solutions and critical problem-solving in a safe, cost-effective, and environmentally focused way.

“As well as reducing freight and emissions, we are decreasing material handling and repackaging, consolidating our warehouse footprint, and improving our ability to provide an agile service with short lead times to meet our customers’ dynamic operational demands. These upgrades simplify and enhance our internal capacity, allowing us to grow with market demands and ensure seamless logistics and delivery in the region.”

“We are committed to driving safety and unlocking additional efficiencies for our clients and workforce,” said Shankar Annamalai, Vice President for ChampionX Permian Basin. “This equipment enhances safety capabilities through inherent vapor recovery, grounding and splash protection systems and provides a more efficient production and delivery model for all stakeholders.”
