BASIC ACCOUNTABILITY

The Carbon Accounting Lead reports directly to the A&D, Carbon Accounting and Special Projects Accounting Manager and is responsible for establishing and progressing carbon accounting capabilities within Devon. This involves establishing and coordinating carbon accounting support activities within the accounting organization and serving as the main liasion and subject matter expert to the operations and environmental, health and safety experts involved in identifying, capturing and reporting on emissions. This indiviudal will also be reposinble for the optimization role within the Financial Accounting Organization. Maintaining a focus on continuous improvement is critical for this role.

 

 

EDUCATION

Bachelor’s degree in Business, Accounting, Finance, or other related field

 

EXPERIENCE

Requires a minimum of 6 years of Accounting experience; industry experience preferred

 

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Serve as the primary liason and develop strong relationships with key stakeholders from Devon’s operations and EHS teams which are focused on carbon and emissions accounting and related processes, controls and reporting (serve on carbon accounting project team)
  • Stay up to date with proposed and implemented regulatory (SEC, EPA, etc..) reporting requirements around emissions and carbon footprint (GHG, methane, etc.)
  • Establish roadmap and key milestones as Devon progresses carbon and emissions accounting efforts to support the business
  • Coordinate and optimize financial reporting processes and deliverables associated with carbon and emissions accounting
  • Assist operations teams to implement and maintain processes, controls and reporting of emissions and achieve the following relevant financial statement assertions:
    • Existence and occurrence
    • Accuracy and valuation
    • Completeness
    • Rights and obligations
    • Classification
    • Cut-off
  • Build out plan and timeline to establish data capture, processes and controls to capture all dollars incurred associated with emission reduction efforts (Capital, Production Expenses, etc.)
  • Represent accounting by serving on various Devon ESG sub-committees and participate in the review of Devon’s draft sustainability reports before they are distributed externally  
  • Establish a network of relationships and actively engage with key carbon accounting contacts at peer oil and gas companies
  • Assist the business in developing a model that would evaluate capital allocation decisions (capital, acquisitions, etc.) on how potential projects would impact emission targets and metrics
  • Apply subject matter expertise to educate other accounting leaders and key stakeholders on carbon accounting requirements
  • Support SOX Administrator to ensure controls are appropriately designed and operating effectively over carbon accounting processes
  • Other responsibilities as deemed appropriate

  • Oil and Gas Industry Experience required
