Our multinational mining client is looking for an expat Chief Surveyor to manage and deliver all survey requirements for both underground mining and surface operations. The role involves ensuring that production survey plans are updated and executed in accordance with short and medium-term production planning requests, to support the achievement of the mine’s short-term targets. This role reports directly into the Technical Services Manager.

Responsibilities:

  • Accountable for the management and adherence to the Safety, Health, Environment and Community (SHEC) policies and procedures in area of responsibility as well as compliance to the statutory requirements as stipulated in the prospecting and mining licenses.
  • Coordinate all survey activities across the mine operation, establishing procedures and managing survey data to meet production requirements and timelines.
  • Compile month-end production figures for reconciliation and manage surface survey infrastructure and equipment.
  • Manage systems for the lay out and maintenance of survey reference marks both on the surface and underground, for the control of drilling, development, services and production activities;
  • Monitor mine surveying systems and performance measures and formulate alternatives and improvements to systems and methods;
  • Manage the survey requirements for declines, roadways, stopes, buildings, stockpiles waste dumps and all related infrastructure both on surface and underground;
  • Ensure survey data is compiled into correct formats and grid reference systems;
  • Conduct spot checks and regular audits to ensure data accuracy;
  • Communicate effectively with technical, operational, and managerial teams, while building and maintaining relationships with key stakeholders to support the achievement of business objectives.
  • Plan and ensure timely submission of statutory survey plans, while ensuring compliance with the Botswana Mines, Quarries, Works, and Machinery Act.
  • Establish and implement systems and processes for quality management and manage QA/QC programs, addressing non-compliance issues promptly and effectively.
  • Develop reporting systems for tracking department performance, conduct monthly reconciliations of ore, waste, and stockpile movements, and oversee the measurement and reporting of underground development and mining activities.
  • Provides on-the-job training for subordinate staff, monitors behaviour and takes necessary remedial action, including recommending disciplinary action, in line with laid down policies and procedures;
  • Proposes and implements staff development and training programmes for the area of responsibility to ensure a competent, efficient and motivated staff.
  • Perform other duties as may be defined by manager.

Requirements: Qualification and Skill

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mine Surveying or equivalent. 
  • Must be in possession of a valid Class B Driver’s Licence
  • 15+ years mine surveying experience, with experience in senior survey roles in underground mine surveying;
  • At least 5 years’ experience with fully mechanised sub level open stoping essential, experience with backfilling operations desirable;
  • Surface survey experience essential including the surveying of services and stockpile surveying;
  • Experience with managing underground mining contractors and producing payment related quantity survey reports;
  • Experience with producing plans and sections for various governmental stakeholders;
  • Survey project experience is desirable, i.e. decline re-traverses;
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and manage surveyor groups and liaising with stakeholders;
  • Advance track record in the use of mine survey software – Deswik experience preferred
  • Proven experience in preparing detailed scopes of work, cost estimates, and preparation of capital expenditure requests; and
  • A solid understanding of electrical and fixed plant maintenance practices
  • Strong analytical and interpretation skills coupled with the ability to make decisions in a fast-changing environment
