Bakken Overview
The Bakken trend is a sequence of liquids-rich sand and shale layers in the Williston Basin, which stretches across western North Dakota and into Canada. The company’s position in the Bakken development area is comprised of approximately 560,000 net acres, which include 382,000 net mineral acres and 178,000 net leasehold acres. The company focuses on unconventional tight-oil play development and production in the most prolific portion of the basin.
During 2022, net production averaged 95 MBOED. There were 43 operated wells brought online during 2022, bringing the total to more than 800 operated wells online at year-end.

Description
If you are selected as the Bakken Construction Lead, you will be responsible for the oversight of Construction operations in the Bakken. This role manages the tactical execution of individual projects while assisting the Construction Superintendent in management of the strategic direction of the GCR Construction Management Group. The overall goal is to ensure that jobsite operations comply with design specifications, are completed on schedule, within budget, and adhere to quality standards while ensuring the protection of the crafts on site. This position works from the ConocoPhillips Watford City, North Dakota field office.
Responsibilities may include:
- Promoting Health, Safety and Environmental (HSE) objectives to the site teams, including the construction contractors employed in the area through active participation in LSRV and BBS observations as well as input into the Safety Roundtables
- Responsible for effective personnel utilization and staffing of the field workforce organization to ensure each jobsite is staffed with qualified personnel
- Report the Contractor What and How work gets done, Trust but Verify
- Resolve issues with Project Site Leads before it impacts Schedule
- Be an active member of the GCR Projects organization and act as the primary field contact for interface issues that arise within the group that affect construction
- Influence GCR Project Team to ensure a ‘construction-based approach’ to the execution of projects to promote efficiency and schedule accuracy
- Provide input into the craft recognition program
- Handle the following construction processes for Bakken projects: a. construction planning and constructability b. Construction execution c. Construction completion and handover d. Site Management e. Construction Readiness f. Construction Turnover to Operations
- Assist Construction Superintendent in maintaining a rolling 9-month plan for construction staffing and contractor requirements
- Manage jobsite expenditures for contracts, equipment, material, and services to ensure construction operations are within budget
- Run site productivity and spend trajectory in accordance with the control estimate and control schedule
- Actively participate in constructability reviews, risk assessments, pre-mob site readiness and encourage innovation opportunities
- Review and approve Contractor execution plans and strategy prior to the start of work
- Provide technical review of the construction contractor’s bid during the evaluation process
- Monitor fabrication activities to ensure appropriate actions are taken to mitigate impact to construction activities
- Ensure that construction is in accordance with drawings, specifications, and codes
- Lead the construction team by providing clear objectives and directions
- Hold construction contractors to the terms and conditions of the contract
- Participate in monthly reviews of HS&E events
- Maintain effective communication and relations with contractor management teams
- Manage the interface between Construction and Operations in the coordination and transfer of completed work
Basic/Required:
- Must be legally authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis for anyone other than current employer
- Current/valid driver’s license
- 3+ years of construction experience working for an oil and gas operator
- 3+ years of experience in roles leading Construction site crews
- 1+ years of experience working in the Construction Trades
- Advanced proficiency in skills to evaluate, plan, monitor and manage the execution of the project activities
- Intermediate knowledge of all phases of construction operations relating to field activities, engineering disciplines, construction technologies and jobsite management
- Willing and able (with or without reasonable accommodation) to perform/align with the following: Climb various ladders and stairs up to 50 feet, Lift and transport articles weighing up to 50 pounds, carry material daily on even and uneven terrain, Work outside in temperature extremes or adverse weather conditions
Preferred:
- Bachelor’s degree or higher in Construction Management, Engineering, other related technical field, or foreign equivalent
- 5+ years of experience with demonstrated success in leadership role of capital projects
- 3+ years of previous experience with L48 projects in Bakken, Eagle Ford or Permian business unit
- Strong interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills
- Demonstrated technical competence—understanding of design and installation of new and brownfield facilities
- Strong multi-tasking skills with ability to handle multiple ongoing activities
- Knowledge of rules, regulations, standards, and specifications applicable for installations in the Bakken
- Listens actively and invites new ideas for exchanged opinions, then influences and acts to drive positive performance and achieve results
- Builds positive relationships based on trust and seeks collaboration across organizational boundaries to achieve goals
- Drives thoughtful and pragmatic change, encourages innovative thinking and continuous improvement, and models adaptability through resourcefulness, flexibility and positivity
