Overview

Aramco is seeking an Energy Systems Modeler to join the Technology Outlook and Strategy team within the Technology Strategy & Planning Department.

The Energy Systems Modeler works in the Technology Outlook and Strategy Division (TOS) within the Technology Strategy and Planning Department (TSPD). The TOS team provides crucial input for both the corporate and technology strategy through detailed analysis and insights on emerging and innovative technologies impacting the global energy industry.

The primary role of the Energy Systems Modeler is to support the development of an in-house energy systems model, to assess the potential of different economic, policy and technology pathways to achieve decarbonization, in the transition to a lower-carbon global energy system. Outputs include sectors, data and scenarios modelling, data gathering, data visualization tools and dashboards reports that will help inform decision makers in the Company and support the preparation of technology outlook reports, and sustainability technology strategies. Furthermore, the Energy System Modeler will conduct innovative research and policy analysis on the energy systems sectors of interest to the Company, provide technical expertise and expert insights to senior management, and foster the development of talent within the organization.
 

Key Reponsibilities

Develop robust methodologies for gathering, processing, and structuring data from reliable internal and external sources. 

Develop modeling frameworks to translate data, policy, and technology developments into model inputs to assess the potential of emerging and disruptive energy technologies.

Build and/or use calibrated energy systems models and algorithms to analyze potential energy and technology pathways across different sectors of the economy.

Specify and estimate commodity inputs and outputs, and project other key model input variables including installed capacities, commodities production and technoeconomics for numerous technologies in different energy and industrial sectors.

Identify and analyze market trends and developments in the global energy system, considering global energy economics, trade flows, product specifications, supply/demand of fuels, consumer and business behavior, policies, and regulations and translate this data into model inputs.

Assist research efforts within the team to prepare high-quality insights and publications (i.e. outlook reports, whitepapers, deep-dives) to support corporate-level strategic decisions and R&D Center to develop low-carbon energy technology solutions.
The modeler will conduct quantitative technoeconomics analyses and research based on market dynamics, technology trends, project financing, market integration, costs across the supply value chain, and relevant policies and regulations

The modeler will develop codes and algorithms to support model development, contribute to report writing to highlight model results, and contribute to developing presentations to highlight model results

Keep abreast of evolving global policies and regulations impacting the energy and chemicals industry, with particular focus on clean energy technologies supporting the energy transition, climate and sustainability, 

The successful candidate will apply strong analytical and modeling skills to develop a deep understanding of the dynamics of the energy and chemicals industry, focusing on modeling the energy transition to lower-carbon energy sources as well as identifying new markets to increase hydrocarbon demand such as chemicals or materials.

Mentor and coach junior staff in the team.
 

Minimum Requirements

Master’s degree computer science, software engineering, data science, energy systems modeling or related field is required. A PhD in energy modelling would be a distinct advantage.

A minimum of 6 years of professional experience, preferably in data science, information systems management and maintenance, and/or software development. Knowledge and experience of energy systems and modeling would be highly desirable.

Strong technical knowledge and working experience with computer programming languages such as Python and R. Knowledge of data visualization software such as Power BI or Tableau is highly desirable.

Strategic thinker with demonstrated recognition by peers as an expert. Understanding of key issues impacting the global energy industry, and how low-carbon energy technologies can play a role in a global sustainable energy system.

Experience gained from working in multi-disciplinary teams in reputable energy, chemicals or economics consulting firms or from corporate planning functions in energy and chemicals companies are highly regarded.
