Job Summary

Alaska Overview
ConocoPhillips Alaska, Inc. is Alaska’s largest crude oil producer and largest owner of exploration leases, with approximately 1 million net undeveloped acres at year-end 2023. The company produced an average of 195 thousand barrels of oil equivalent per day (MBOED) in 2023. ConocoPhillips Alaska holds major ownership interests in two of North America’s largest legacy equivalent per day conventional oil fields, both located on Alaska’s North Slope: Kuparuk, which the company operates, and Prudhoe Bay. Additionally, ConocoPhillips Alaska owns and operates several fields on the Western North Slope. The company also has an ownership interest in the Trans-Alaska Pipeline System and owns and operates the Polar Tankers fleet.

Job Description

This apprenticeship program is targeting students who are graduates of the 2-year Process Technology degree program.

The apprentice will be expected to actively engage in a variety of safety programs and processes, and to advance rapidly as a Safety Leader.

The Apprentice Operator will also get a general exposure to the main areas of field operations and maintenance. As they progress through the program, they will be expected to be an active member of the operations and maintenance teams that they work with, proactively participating in conversations and asking questions that develop their personal learning, while respecting the professionalism of the operating team. The expectation of the Apprentice is to complete the 2 ½ year apprenticeship before becoming an Operator.

Assignments will be located at the Alpine and Kuparuk oil fields on the North Slope of Alaska. The work schedule will be a two-week on two-week off rotation.

Your responsibilities may include:

  • Learning about health, safety, and environmental hazards
  • Practicing emergency preparedness and learning how to recognize emergencies
  • Respond to and report incidents and near-misses
  • Attend daily tailgate meetings
  • Make rounds and take readings
  • Monitoring normal operation conditions
  • Troubleshooting as problems arise
  • Witnessing and participating in the work permit system
  • Assisting in energy isolation

Basic/Required:

  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis for anyone other than current employer
  • Associate Degree or higher in Process Technology
  • Current/valid driver’s license
  • Basic knowledge of Process Safety Management
  • Willing and able (with or without a reasonable accommodation) to work in a remote based environment working a 2 week on/2 week off schedule
  • Willing and able (with or without a reasonable accommodation) to work in physical exposures that include severe arctic weather, moderate loads and climbing stairs/ladders
  • Willing and able (with or without a reasonable accommodation) to comply with all aspects of a respiratory protection policy

Preferred:

  • Completion of an operator internship within the petroleum industry
  • 3+ years North Slope experience
  • Advanced level safety leadership
  • Ability to invite dialogue to gain a shared understanding and influence with confidence to drive performance and achieve business results
  • Ability to generate effective solutions based on available information and makes timely decisions that are safe and ethical
  • Actively communicates and takes time to safely perform work to protect our people and the environment
  • Transmits information so it is received and understood in the way it was intended
  • Takes an active role in acquiring, developing and retaining a high-performing, highly engaged team
