Permian Basin Overview

ConocoPhillips and its heritage companies have operated in the Permian Basin for almost 100 years. Across New Mexico and Texas, the company holds conventional positions in the Northwest Shelf and Central Basin Platform, and an unconventional position in the Delaware Basin. Permian saw significant growth in 2021 with the acquisition of Concho Resources Inc. in January 2021 and the addition of Shell’s Permian acreage in December 2021. At year-end, the company held approximately 1.5 million net acres in the Permian Basin.

Net production for the Permian in 2022 was 461 MBOED.

Description

If you are selected as the Petrophysics Analyst, you will report through the Subsurface organization to the Geoscience Supervisor. You will take a leadership role in log data management and governance across the Permian. You will work actively with Asset teams, OBO, and Business Development in both Midland and Delaware Basins to ensure data and process quality, and fit-for-purpose approaches to both. You will also work cooperatively with IT Data Management to leverage their big picture and process capabilities. This role requires practical geoscience data management experience, strong collaboration, active engagement, and excellent written and verbal communications skills.

Responsibilities may include:

Petrophysics Team Support and Data Management:

  • Discovery, loading, and maintenance of raw and derivative log, core data to various interpretation platforms/databases; proactive work with other COP teams and vendors to ensure data availability and fidelity
  • Development, implementation of a cohesive approach to well, log, and core data management for Interactive Petrophysics, TechLog, Studio, Transform, and Geographix
  • Preliminary QC and analysis (focus on header, survey, log type/depth coverage, tops availability) to support petrophysics interpretation
  • Derivative product organization and distribution/loading to receiving platforms/databases
  • Maintenance of Delaware Basin core Spotfire project; development of same for Midland Basin; formalizing background data connections (creation and maintenance of core database)
  • Collaborative work with Asset, RC, and OBO team Analysts to constructively overlap while making certain not to duplicate work

Data Governance:

  • Development and maintenance of processes/workflows that support databases and platforms including Interactive Petrophysics, TechLog, Studio, Transform, and Geographix
  • Guidance and hands-on work to modernize legacy log handling workflows while maintaining data integrity
  • Strategic thinking around governance, with a focus on sustainable data flow and enabling integration
  • Develop processes and governance specific to making OBO and trade log data available and work-station ready
  • Guidance for IT Data Management as they consider adoption/implementation of logs database solution

Mentor/Mentee Relationships:

  • Support Asset, RC, and OBO team Analysts’ professional development by actively engaging, ensuring that knowledge and process transfer is a two-way street
  • As appropriate, work with petrophysicists to develop skills that provide the basis for preliminary analysis and front-line support of geoscientists
  • Work cooperatively with IT Data Management to promote an understanding of Permian log data management needs, priorities, and governance

Basic/Required:

  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis for anyone other than current employer
  • 3+ years of industry experience as a geoscience technician or geoscience analyst
  • High level of proficiency with digital log data handling, including QC, data types/nomenclature, curve mnemonics, and merging/splicing
  • High level of proficiency with geoscience data, particularly formation tops
  • High level of proficiency in geoscience software (including one or more of the following, or a similar platform: Interactive Petrophysics, TechLog, Petrel, Studio, Geographix)
  • Intermediate proficiency with Microsoft O365 applications: Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, SharePoint, Teams, and Word

Preferred:

  • 5+ years of industry experience as a geoscience technician, geoscience analyst, and/or petrophysics technician
  • In-depth familiarity with all types of geoscience and reservoir data
  • Advanced level of proficiency in geoscience software (including Interactive Petrophysics, TechLog, Petrel, Studio, Geographix, Transform, ArcGIS), and Microsoft Office products
  • Strong organizational skills—ability to prioritize activities and requests from contributors and stakeholders
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrable ability to influence behavior and practices across teams and disciplines
  • High level of initiative, enthusiasm, and creativity
  • Listens actively and invites new ideas for shared understanding, then influences and acts to drive positive performance and achieve results
