Midland Basin Overview
ConocoPhillips holds approximately 372,000 total net acres in the Midland Basin, which includes approximately 248,000 unconventional net acres located in the heart of west Texas. The company operates over 2,800 producing wells across Midland, Upton, Andrews, Martin and Glasscock counties.
In 2023, the company operated five drilling rigs on average, including two electric rigs. Net production in 2023 averaged 182 MBOED and 106 operated wells were brought online.

Description
As a Midland Basin North Production Engineer, you will provide direct support to the operations in the Midland Basin North area. You will maintain positive relationships with geoscience, land, operations, wells, and reservoir engineering teams.
In the Production Engineer position, you will provide technical expertise and engineering designs/procedures focused on optimizing production from base wells; artificial lift design and optimization; remedial stimulation, artificial lift repairs and workovers; and implementation of development programs including the artificial lift design of new wells.
Responsibilities may include:
- Owner of all production engineering responsibilities for assigned area
- Oversee & interpret existing well production data
- Identify, pursue, and justify surface and down hole optimization opportunities and work closely with Facilities on surface opportunities. Create cost estimates and AFE to support activities
- Assess innovative optimization opportunities for implementation
- Root cause of failure analysis to drive continuous improvement in artificial lift reliability
- Identify, select, design the artificial lift equipment needed, down hole and surface equipment
- Coordinate with facility engineers to model and optimize existing facilities
- Communicate daily with field and projects staff – support and lead in the day-to-day business – support and lead the development activities (design and implementation)
- Support field Production Operations staff on technical issues including regulatory compliance matters
- Pursue operating cost reductions to improve LOE
- Work with other support groups on Production Operations issues and other producers on third party tie-ins and related issues
- Handle base volume budget and lease operating expense budgets and support development of the region’s capital budget
- Prepare robust economic evaluations for operating capital and significant expense production projects
- Oversee chemical program for assigned area and develop/review appropriate KPIs
- Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and internal COP ESG directives
Basic/Required:
- Must be legally authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis for anyone other than current employer
- Current/Valid Driver’s License
- Bachelor’s degree or higher in Engineering, other related technical field, or foreign equivalent
- 1+ years of experience in the upstream oil and gas industry
- 1+ years of direct experience as an engineer working for an oil and gas operator
- Willing and able (with or without reasonable accommodation) to travel 10% of the time on a yearly basis
Preferred:
- 3+ years of direct experience as a Production, Facilities and/or Completions Engineer
- Demonstrated proficiencies in artificial lift methods, especially rod pumps, gas lift, and ESP. Ability to size, monitor, optimize, evaluate, and trouble shoot different artificial lift methods.
- Well performance analysis, decline/rate-time analysis, economics analysis
- Experience with software packages including but not limited to economic evaluation software, ValNav, Spotfire, Rodstar, Wellview, XSPOC
- Exposure to well completions, production operations and workover operations
- Tank battery operation, vessel, and centrifugal pump sizing
- Saltwater disposal operations, especially horizontal pump operation
- Takes ownership of actions and follows through on commitments by holding others accountable and standing up for what is right
- Builds effective solutions based on available information and makes timely decisions that are safe and ethical
- Listens actively and invites new ideas for exchanged opinions, then influences and acts to drive positive performance and achieve results
