Overview
The candidate is expected to take a leadership role in defining and executing drilling technology programs for the company. In particular, under defined research programs, the applicant is expected to execute projects related to the design, engineering, and development of novel drilling electro-mechanical downhole tools. During the course of such development projects, candidate is expected to conduct thorough engineering evaluations of business needs related to/affected by the company’s operations at the Drilling and Workover Admin Area. Candidate is expected to conduct conceptual design of downhole tools that address identified business needs. Candidate is expected to follow conceptual designs with engineering techno-economic studies that reflect the business value realized from the identified conceptual designs for a) the company and b) for potential commercial viability upon completion of the project. Candidate is expected to create an engineering project proposal for the step-by-step execution of the product development plan until it becomes commercially available either in-house or in collaboration with external collaborators. Upon management approval of engineering proposals, the candidate is expected to manage and execute product development projects through detailed engineering design, manufacturing, yard testing, engineering qualification as per the company’s standards and Drilling and Workover’s requirements, field testing, and finally to commercialization.
The candidate is preferred to hold an advanced degree in Mechanical, Electrical, or Petroleum Engineering or related majors with more than 10 years in the Drilling and Workover industry or related product development fields and/or project management. Outstanding technical ability and established successful track record in job performance as reflected by his prior job responsibility & achievements, industry recognition, intensive industry training programs, patents (granted or pending) and technical publications, is required. Ability to communicate ideas, work with others, and utilize their expertise and technical knowledge to achieve results. Ability to mentor young researchers is required.
Key Responsibilities
- Conducts and supervises day to day operations of R&D projects within the Drilling Product Development domain.
- Communicates and documents development project plan and results to stakeholders and management.
- Efficiently deploys developed technologies to expedite delivering new solutions to stakeholders.
- Publishes research and development findings in high ranking publications including scientific journals.
- Generates and protects novel ideas through filing patents
- Review and mentor less experienced researchers and engineers in the domain to achieve research KPI’s (technology deployments, publications, patents)
- Provides expert advice and assistance on operating problems relating to his area of expertise.
- Executes project management for development of new research projects within his area of expertise.
- Participates in project technical reviews and reviews proposals for new or changed operating procedures on his area of expertise to ensure efficient and economic field test operations.
- Conducts economic studies on potential development proposals as appropriate to resolve alternative causes of action relative to his area of expertise.
- Acts as Task Force Leader as assigned to solve special engineering problems in his area of expertise.
- Originates ideas for improvements, develops a basis for required field testing and Management review, analyzes results and recommends new or changed procedures and/or facilities
- Recommends, designs and oversees suitable outside investigations to resolve engineering problems which exceed current engineering knowledge in his specialty.
- Makes presentations to Senior and Executive Management as appropriate.
- Trains and develops Aramco researchers, engineers, and technical personnel in his area of expertise.
- Participates in technical societies and technical groups in his area of expertise; represents Aramco on industry committees or specialized groups as appropriate.
- Performs other miscellaneous duties as assigned by the Division Head to which he reports.
Minimum Requirements
Education: BS in engineering or equivalent technical field. MS or PhD is desirable, but not required; intensive industry training including appropriate specialized courses and seminars is expected. Experience: Typically, has at least 10 years of related experience, including 7 years of intensive experience in his specialty. Typically, will be active in related professional societies and will have achieved professional recognition through publications, committee activities, etc. Will typically have received a higher level of industrial recognition, such as committee chairmanships, appointment as “distinguished lecturer”, etc. Other: Must be clearly recognized by both his supervisors and colleagues as thoroughly qualified and highly competent in his area of expertise. In addition, must be recognized by PE&D as an expert in his/her field. Must have demonstrated ability to communicate ideas clearly to work effectively with others, and to utilize his technical knowledge to achieve practical results. Supervisors and Aramco Management must have confidence in his judgment and recommendations. Additionally, because of prior contacts and/or industry recognition, Shareholder representatives, SAG personnel and other outside contacts should also recognize his technical expertise. He must be able to represent Aramco effectively in such contacts and command technical respect. Further, to wide recognition as an outstanding expert, must have repeatedly demonstrated his ability to employ his expertise effectively to achieve practical Aramco objectives.
