Job Summary

Eagle Ford Overview

The liquids-rich Eagle Ford tight oil trend, located in the Western Gulf Coast Basin of South Texas, represents the company’s second-most prolific unconventional resource development. ConocoPhillips was one of the first companies into the liquids play, resulting in a low-cost entry into this acreage. In 2009, the company began exploring the development potential of this play and by year-end 2022 held approximately 199,000 net leasehold and mineral acres, primarily in DeWitt, Karnes, and Live Oak counties.

During 2022, 153 operated wells were brought online, bringing total wells online at year-end to more than 1,700. Net production in 2022 averaged 220 MBOED.

Description

If you are selected as the Drilling Engineer, you will work with the Gulf Coast & Rockies (GCR) Eagle Ford Drilling Engineering Supervisor and be a part of a team primarily focused on supporting ConocoPhillips’ drilling program in the Eagle Ford. You will participate in multi-discipline well planning as well as developing well plans aligned with stated well and project objectives. This will be done in full compliance with applicable policies, standards, and regulations, with a focus on safety of personnel, environmental stewardship and operational integrity. The anticipated travel for this position is 20% of the time.

Job Description

Responsibilities may include:

  • Being an advocate for safety by crafting and implementing projects in such a manner as to improve safety results
  • Interacting effectively within a multidisciplinary team to safely and efficiently deliver goals
  • Providing detailed engineering including formation pressure analysis, directional drilling, well design, and other routine detailed engineering
  • Providing engineering support to drilling operations to provide delivery of the well objectives through daily collaboration with onsite personnel
  • Assisting in preparation and submission of all required government permits and ensuring full compliance with all regulatory requirements
  • Working with the asset, planning, and finance teams to provide cost estimates, duration estimates, and track and control accruals for activity
  • Using data analytics and statistics to make value-based decisions
  • Developing relationships with the vendor community to align with ConocoPhillips and vendor goals
  • Assisting in the preparation and evaluation of tenders/bids for drilling support services and materials
  • Developing goals and performance metrics; tracking and measuring metrics and implementing improvements as necessary
  • Identifying and incorporating standard processes from past operations to ensure continuous improvement
  • Promoting a one team environment and providing mentorship in areas of expertise
  • Preparing and conducting peer reviews and posting end of well results in order to provide continuous improvement
  • Participating in benchmarking studies (both internal and external to ConocoPhillips) to identify, transfer and apply the best engineering and operational practices
  • Promoting information sharing by collaborating with ConocoPhillips technical SME’s and participating in ConocoPhillips NOE’s and industry technical societies (i.e. SPE, AADE, etc.)

Basic/Required:

  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis for anyone other than current employer
  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Petroleum Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Chemical Engineering, other related Engineering field, or foreign equivalent
  • 5+ years of experience in engineering within the upstream industry
  • Willing and able (with or without reasonable accommodation) to perform/align with the following: Be on call outside of standard working hours; Travel 20% of the time on a yearly basis

Preferred:

  • 5+ years of experience in all aspects of drilling engineering and/or operations
  • 3+ years of experience with an operator
  • 3+ years of experience in L48 unconventional plays (Permian, Eagle Ford, Bakken, Haynesville, and/or Marcellus)
  • Knowledge of well reporting (WellView) and Landmark drilling engineering software
  • Well-developed project management skills
  • Ability to think “creatively” and willing to be challenged
  • Ability to review drilling performance and make recommendations to the engineering team and management on the adoption of new equipment or techniques to improve performance
  • Strong teammate with a proven track record working within multi-discipline teams, internally and externally, to achieve consensus and alignment
  • Willing to accept risks and aggressively pursue continuous improvement
