About the Role

An exciting opportunity has arisen to be part of Santos’ Legal, Risk & Compliance. Based at Port Moresby and reporting to the Legal Manager – PNG, the primary objective of this position is to support the Legal Manager and Senior Management of PNG Asset in:

  • Advising of applicable laws and obligations relating to Santos’s business objectives.
  • Ensuring that the business objectives and Santos’ vision and purpose are lawfully executed.
  • Ensuring that legal advice and support is provided accurately and efficiently, in a timely manner, and is focused on the key objectives of Santos while being of the highest standard.
  • Key focus/support area – managing litigation, litigious matters and disputes and claims.

Key responsibilities of the role is to provide proactive, commercially focused legal advice to execute initiatives and objectives of Santos, including:

  • Advising on all aspects of litigation and litigious matters involving Santos; 
  • Being actively involved in the day-to-day conduct of material disputes;
  • Assessing and implementing defence strategies around key corporate risks associated with business conduct;
  • Legal representation in Santos projects; 
  • Supporting and monitoring Company’s policy on document retention to ensure compliance with legal obligations in connection with any contemplated litigation or investigation;
  • Provide advice and counsel to the Business Asset on legislative, regulatory and policy issues and participate in planning to ensure the Business remains in regulatory compliance.
  • Confer with counterparts in the industry and heads of various legal and commercial offices to address joint venture issues;
  • Liaising with external legal service providers and establish teams in readiness for anticipated disputes;
  • Legal cost management;
  • Compliance with the Santos Management System (SMS); Santos Delegation of Authority (DOA); and Santos Corporate Governance and Safety requirements.
  • Assist with issues and matters facing the PNG Asset as directed to by the Legal Manager.

  

About You

We are seeking for candidates that is a good communicator, a problem-solver with keen eye for details, and a strong team player with the following professional experience:

  • Extensive years’ corporate legal experience (including private practice and in-house), preferably with some oil and gas/energy sector experience
  • Knowledge and experience in corporate commercial matters and litigation involving energy, oil and gas.
  • Sound knowledge of regulatory environment in energy sector.
  • Sound knowledge and experience with PNG courts.
  • High level commercial and legal acumen with the ability to identify and mitigate risk.
  • Excellent drafting skills and initiative.
  • Strong strategic and analytical thinker.
  • Must have exceptional interpersonal skills including ability to network at a high level and build relationships.

Essential qualifications required for this position are:

  • Bachelor of Laws
  • Admitted to practice in PNG and hold current PNG legal practicing certificate
