The Sr. Safety Specialist will be responsible for the implementation of safe practices and processes into department operations within their basin of coverage.
Safe practices and processes include the adoption of hazard and risk management processes, evaluation methodologies with accepted industry practices, and execution of proper layers of protection based on appropriate hierarchy of controls. This job function is accomplished through partnerships created with division and field management, operations, and engineering to understand the work processes, performing qualitative and quantitative risk assessment, implement corporate and division safety initiatives, and drive compliance with corporate and regulatory standards.
Primary Deliveries:
- Provide technical safety expertise and regulatory knowledge for all operational departments (Drilling, Completions, Facilities, Production, Workover, and Pipeline)
- Provide technical safety expertise and guidance on implementation and maintenance of Process Safety programs
- Liaise with operations and engineering to understand areas of opportunity and continuous improvement related to facilities that are regulated under Process Safety Management (PSM) requirements.
- Coordinate support of PSM programs and requirements in areas including but not limited to: Training, Incident Investigation, Operational Procedures, Auditing, Emergency Response, and Contractor Safety.
- Participate in all Process Hazard Assessments (PHAs) that are required for systems that are required to be evaluated.
- Conduct hazard analysis with operations and engineering to identify hazards collectively and develop appropriate strategies around mitigating anything that is identified.
- Perform thorough on-site verifications to identify gaps related to regulatory requirements, internal safe practices, mechanical integrity issues, behavioral or cultural issues, or knowledge and skills issues.
- Work with operations and engineering to identify and mitigate any Industrial Hygiene challenges that may be present within the workplace.
- Develop and conduct training to develop safety competency within area of coverage
- Provide guidance to EOG contractors for improving their safety programs in accordance with EOG’s expectations
- Manage KPA EHS incident reporting cases to completion for area of coverage
- Assist in preparation and participate in pre-job meetings
- Perform contractor safety evaluations to identify gaps within their Safety and Environmental Management Systems
- Assist with man-hour collection and audits to ensure accurate recordkeeping
Communication and Influence:
- Actively participate in safety team and appropriate operations team meetings
- Coordinate and facilitate safety meetings with relevant groups
- Clarify Safety related questions and influence others to openly discuss operational hazards
- Utilize risk management and hazard control methodologies to enable operations and engineering to adopt safety control measures into their daily operations and designs
- Display a positive and approachable attitude
- Mentor other Safety personnel to identify their opportunities for professional and technical growth and assist Safety Management developing others in the group
Response:
- Serve as a primary role in the collection of the initial on-scene incident investigation data. When appropriate, assist in securing the scene and in the collection of the initial information immediately following an incident.
- Assist operations and on-scene personnel in emergency situations. Actively participate, support, and provide guidance during tactical emergency response efforts.
- Serve in the assigned tactical response role and participate in training and drills. Support operations in the development of drill scenarios for assigned area of operation.
- Maintain involvement after injuries and illness to support case management for EOG personnel and contractors
Optimize, Learn, & Share:
- Maintain log of identified hazards and risks to discuss and elevate to Safety Manager
- Share lessons learned in area of assigned operations and other relevant disciplines
- Coordinate Incident Reviews with contractors and local supervision
- Promote ideas for efficiency through use of technology or synergies with other departments

10+ years’ experience in Safety & Environmental, with oil and gas industry experience preferred. Bachelor’s degree in Safety, Environmental or related field preferred; high school diploma or GED required. Strong technical knowledge. Broad knowledge of safety and environmental laws and regulations. Must be computer literate with excellent communications and analytical skills. Ability to work effectively with others at all levels. Ability to work with minimal supervision. Ability to exercise sound judgment.
Position will be filled at a level commensurate with experience.
