Permian Basin Overview

ConocoPhillips and its heritage companies have operated in the Permian Basin for almost 100 years. Across New Mexico and Texas, the company holds conventional positions in the Northwest Shelf and Central Basin Platform, and an unconventional position in the Delaware Basin. Permian saw significant growth in 2021 with the acquisition of Concho Resources Inc. in January 2021 and the addition of Shell’s Permian acreage in December 2021. At year-end, the company held approximately 1.5 million net acres in the Permian Basin.

Net production for the Permian in 2022 was 461 MBOED.

Description

The primary role for the Permian Wells Intervention Drill Out Engineer is to support the execution and continuous improvement of the Permian Wells Intervention Drill Out Program. In this role, you will work closely with the drill out superintendent, field superintendents, wellsite supervisors, completions engineers, and the Global APS team. You will be responsible for developing drill out procedures for both stick pipe and coil tubing operations. You will also be responsible for developing KPIs to evaluate drill out performance and reporting your conclusions to management. Effective communication and collaboration with multiple teams will be critical for the success of this role.

Responsibilities may include:

  • Develop drill out procedures for both stick pipe and CTU operations in the Midland and Delaware Basins in full compliance with applicable policies, standards, and regulations, with a focus on safety of personnel, environmental stewardship, and operational integrity
  • Collaborate with Global APS team to develop KPI metrics for ConocoPhillips Permian drill out operations
  • Perform peer benchmarking exercises comparing ConocoPhillips Permian drill out operations to offset operators
  • Identify and evaluate emerging technologies to drive efficiencies in ConocoPhillips Permian drill out operations and share findings with other ConocoPhillips BUs
  • Participate in quarterly performance reviews with primary drill out service contractors
  • Provide well specific data analytics reports by generating Spotfire/PowerBi visualizations and performing data analysis that adds value to cost and operational performance
  • Collaborate with Global Wells SMEs to address drill out challenges and complexities
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with the Completions and Production organizations
  • Participate in industry-wide knowledge sharing forums
  • Support field operations concerning engineering and regulatory decisions
  • Engage industry on the latest technology and evaluate feasibility and application for Permian Basin operations
  • Develop authorization for expenditure’s (AFEs) and track project costs
  • Review and approve invoices to ensure accuracy
  • Ensure accurate daily reporting in WellView

Basic/Required:

  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis for anyone other than current employer
  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Engineering, other related technical field, or foreign equivalent
  • 5+ years of experience in oil and gas industry
  • Intermediate level of knowledge of well design & construction fundamentals
  • Willing and able (with or without reasonable accommodation) to travel up to 10% on a yearly basis

Preferred:

  • 10+ years of experience oil and gas industry
  • 3+ years of experience in Wells or Completion Engineering with an operator
  • Understanding of well failure mechanisms and prevention (casing failure modes, corrosion, cement integrity, wellhead equipment & maintenance, equipment metallurgy)
  • Field experience with both stick pipe and coil tubing drill out operations
  • Knowledge of Permian drill out methods and BHAs
  • Experience collecting, managing, and digitizing large datasets; developing KPIs; quantifying progress and influencing change with data
  • Strong team player with demonstrated ability to thrive in multi-discipline teams, internally and externally, to achieve consensus and alignment
